  1. Stanley enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserve) on 16 Sept 1941 and posted to 57/60th Infantry Battalion on 10 Nov 1941. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 26 Dec 1942 and posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 25 Feb 1943. He joined the unit on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After medical treatment and leave, he embarked for New Britain aboard “VAN OUTHOON” on 16 May 1945 and re-joined the unit as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop. He returned to Australia on 13 Jun 1945 and was discharged on 10 Sept 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. After leave and reorganization, he embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 3 Section, “A” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944.   3. Bernard embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. Whilst on New Britain he attended Course No 5, Flame Thrower School from 5 Jul to 9 Jul 1945. He was discharged on15 May 1946.

    Arnold Samuel WEBB

    Arnold was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard M.V. “Koolama”, on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hides” on 16 Dec 1942. After leave and reorganization, he embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 2 Section, “A” Troop. He was medically evacuated to Australia on 21 May 1944. After medical treatment he re-joined the unit on 16 Dec 1944 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 2 Section, “A” Troop. He transferred to 2/2nd Forestry Company, Royal Australian Engineers on 2 May 1945 and returned to Australia on 23 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 10 Jan 1946. Extracted from C D Doig’s “A History of the 2nd Independent Company and 2/2 Commando Squadron”. After the Japanese landed, there was a party of 4 of these first reinforcement men, who had not been attached to any of the Sections, who decided to try and get back to Australia by boat and advise that the 2nd Independent Company was still intact and fighting on. The party consisted of Privates Robert Sydney Larney, Johnny Freeman, Desmond Laurence Lilya and Arnold Samuel Webb. They eventually reached Darwin and then embarked with the No 4 Independent Company for Timor aboard H.M.A.S “VOYAGER” on 22 Sept 1942. The men’s service papers state the following Robert Sydney Larney He was in 119th Australian General Hospital, Darwin from 11 Sept – 17 Sept 1942 and disembarked at Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. Johnny Freeman Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Aug 1942, He was in 119th Australian General Hospital, Darwin from 25 Aug – 8 Sept 1942 and disembarked Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. Desmond Laurence Lilya Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Aug 1942, He was in 119th Australian General Hospital from 16 Aug – 17 Sept 1942. Research shows he returned from Timor with the unit either 11 Dec 1942 or 16 Dec 1942, as the embarkation rolls do not differentiate. Arnold Samuel Webb Now reported “Returned to Australia” No Date, Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".

    John WARD

    John, (the family claim his real name was Daniel Mannix Ward), enlisted in to the Royal Australian Navy on 1 Dec 1936, with Service No 21330 and gave his DOB as 20 Mar 1919. He was discharged from the RAN on 26 Jun 1941. John, there is no mention of why he changed his name, enlisted into the 2nd AIF on 9 Sept 1942 and this time gave his DOB as 10 Jun 1913, both enlistment papers have place of birth as MAFFRA, Victoria. On his army attestation papers, it asks if any other military service he has answered "NO". He was posted to the Australian Army Service Corps on 22 Sept 1942. He attended a No 1 Course Drivers MT (Motor Transport) from 24 Oct to 21 Nov 1942. He transferred to LHQ (Land Headquarters) Training Centre, Jungle Warfare on 24 Mar 1943 and was posted to 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 5 Apr 1943. He transferred to Signals, 7th Australian Division on 5 Jun 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard “CANBERRA” on 26 Jul 1943. His records have no date of joining the unit on New Guinea but after medical treatment at 2/7th Australian General Hospital and 112nd Australian Convalescent Depot, it states that he re-joined the unit on 28 Jul 1944. He is known to have served as a Trooper in Headquarters Group and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in Headquarters Group. He was promoted Acting Sergeant on 21 Nov 1945 and transferred to 53rd Port Craft Company on 31 Dec 1945, then to 56th Port Landing Craft Company on 28 Jan 1946 and further to 13th Small Ships on 4 Feb 1946. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 26 Feb 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".

    James Henry WALL

    James enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserves) with Service No 333431 in Feb 1939, then enlisted in the Permanent Australian Army with Service No VP6931 on 13 Mar 1940 and posted to 2nd Heavy Brigade, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA). He was sent to Darwin Mobile Force on 8 Jun 1940 and transferred to 18th Field Battery, RAA on 22 Sept 1940. He transferred to Provost Corps on 23 Apr 1941 and promoted Acting Corporal whilst servicing in Provost Corps, same date. He reverted to Gunner (Private) and returned to 18th Field Battery, RAA on 13 Sept 1941. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 6 Jul 1942 and after numerous Artillery postings, was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 1 Mar 1943. He joined the 2/2nd on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 Trooper and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 as a Trooper. He returned to Australia aboard "SALAMANA" on 18 Jan 1946 and was discharged on 17 Apr 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. John enlisted on 2 Jul 1940 and was posted to Guerrilla Warfare Centre, Foster, Vict on 26 Mar 1941 and was an original member of the unit, he was promoted to Acting Staff Sergeant on 11 Jul 1941 and his rank of Staff Sergeant was confirmed on 21 Nov 1941. He embarked aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Staff Sergeant in “Q” Staff, Headquarters Group. He was Killed in Action, 20 Feb 1942, when the Ration Truck was caught in an ambush, during the first landing of the Japanese on Timor. He is commemorated on the Northern Territory Memorial, Panel 3. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  8. Arthur (Harry) enlisted on 9 Apr 1941 and had previous service with Natal Mounted Rifles. He was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Corporal in Signals Section, Headquarters Group. He was Mentioned in Despatches, for Gallant and Distinguished Service, London Gazette, 25 May 1943 and in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 119-3 Jun 1943. These are the two Gazettes for the Timor Campaign. See photo below. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred as an Instructor to 1st Commando Training Squadron from 31 May to 28 Jun 1943, then Qld Lines of Communication Records Office on 29 Jun 1943, New Guinea Lines of Communication, Qld detachment on 22 Dec 1943 and back to Qld Lines of Communication Records Office, 28 Feb 1944. He was promoted Acting Sergeant on 1 Sept 1944 and confirmed Sergeant on 20 Jan 1944 and was discharged on 2 Nov 1945.     Ross Allan WINTOUR

    Ross enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserve) on 23 Sept 1941 and was posted to 25th Machine Gun Regiment. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 17 Jun 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 25 Feb 1943. After training, Ross joined the unit on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop. He left the unit on 26 May 1945 and returned to Australia on 28 May 1945. He was discharged on 2 Jun 1945. Roydon (Sep) enlisted on 21 May 1941, was appointed Lance Corporal on 10 Nov 1941 and was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Lance Corporal in No 9 Section, “C” Platoon. He was promoted Corporal on 16 Nov 1942 and after the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 21 Jun 1943 and he embarked for New Guinea aboard “KATOOMBA” on 27 Aug 1943 and re-joined the 2/2nd on 2 Nov 1943 as a Corporal in No 10 Section, Headquarters Group and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was appointed Lance Sergeant on 6 Jul 1945 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Corporal in "A" Troop. He was promoted to Acting Sergeant on18 Aug 1945 and transferred to 4th Survey Battery on 29 Nov 1945. He returned to Australia aboard "KATOOMBA" on 16 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 8 Jan 1946. He was in and out of hospital for some time in 1943 and 1944, was sent to Reallocation Section, 21 Jan 1944 and transferred to Headquarters of 3rd Australian Corps, 7 Feb 1944. Transferred to 1st Lines of Communication Provost Company on 22 Apr 1943 and was promoted to Acting Corporal on 7 May 1943. Bill attended No 15 Qld Lines of Communication Area Junior Leaders Course from 15 Jun to 29 Jun 1943 and was confirmed Corporal on 3 Mar 1944. He transferred to W.A.   13. Jefferson (Rocky) was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Private in No 8 Section, “C” Platoon. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred as an Instructor to 1st Commando Training Squadron from 19 Aug to 25 Oct 1943, then to 9th Command Royal Engineers Workshop on 12 Oct 1944 and embarked for MOROTAI with them aboard “SEA RAY” on 11 Apr 1945. He returned to Australia on 11 Jul 1945 and transferred to 124th Australian General Transport Platoon on 14 Sept 1945. Rocky was discharged on 25 Mar 1946.     Stanley John WARD

    Stanley enlisted on 9 May 1941 and was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Private in No 9 Section, “C” Platoon. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 11 Dec 1942. He embarked for New Guinea aboard "TAROONA” on 11 Jul 1943 and joined the 2/2nd as a Trooper in Headquarters Group and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in Headquarters Group. He transferred to 4th Survey Battery on 29 Nov 1945 and returned to Australia aboard "KATOOMBA" on m17 Dec 1945. He was discharged on 8 Jan 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp

    Albert enlisted on 18 Oct 1940 and was promoted Temporary Corporal on 27 Dec 1940. He was confirmed Corporal on 8 Dec 1941 and was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Corporal in No 8 section, “C” Platoon. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred to Far East Liaison Office on 16 Dec 1943 and embarked for Moratai aboard "GLEN BULMER" on 8 Apr 1945. He returned to Australia aboard "IMPLACABLE" on19 Nov 1945 and was discharged on 3 Dec 1945. Albert was made a Life Member of the Association in 1955. He transferred to 2nd Australian Advanced 2nd Echelon on 23 Oct 1944. He resumed his true name of William Seymour Wallis on 9 Nov 1944. He transferred back to Queensland Lines of Communication on 28 Aug 1945 and was Discharged on 12 Apr 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
