    Ernest (Willy) enlisted on 15 Jul 1941 and was posted to Guerrilla Warfare School, Foster on 22 Aug 1941. He was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard “KOOLAMA" on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private and served in No 7 Section, “C” Platoon. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hides” on 11 Dec 1942. After leave and reorganization, he was appointed Lance Corporal on 8 Jun 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Lance Corporal in No 7 Section, “C” Troop. He was appointed Paid Lance Corporal on 1 Jul 1943 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was reverted to Trooper on 20 Apr 1945 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop. He returned to Australia on 13 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 2 Jan 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He returned to Australia on 28 mar 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 15 Feb 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard "TAROONA" on 11 Jul 1943 and joined the unit in the Headquarters Group as a Trooper on 16 Jul 1943. He retuned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was discharged on 4 Jul 1945.     John Harold WENT

    John enlisted in Citizens Military Force (Reserves) on 10 Feb 1942 and was posted to H.Q. Australian Motor Brigade on 13 May 1942. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 20 Aug 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 5 Apr 1943 and joined the 2/2nd on 15 May 1943. He embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 2 Section, “A” Troop and was wounded in action on 15 Mar 1944 and was hospitalized. He re-joined the 2/2nd on 21 May 1944 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After more medical treatment in Australia, he was transferred to 17th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot on 27 Jan 1945 and was discharged on 16 Jul 1946.     Bernard Ashton WEIR

    Bernard enlisted on 25 May 1936 in the Citizens Military Force (Reserves) with Service No 427855 and served with 60 Field Battery, Royal Australian Artillery and was discharged on 24 Mar 1939. He enlisted in the A.I.F. 8 Nov 1939 and was posted to 2/1st Infantry Battalion. He embarked for the Middle East on 10 Jan 1940 and then embarked for Greece on 16 Mar 1941. He returned to Middle East in May 1941. He returned to Australia aboard "DEVONSHIRE" on 7 Aug 1942. He was promoted Acting Corporal on 28 Dec 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 15 Feb 1943 and joined 2/2nd on 15 May 1943. He reverted to Trooper at own request, same day. Bernard embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. He returned to Australia aboard "TAROONA" on 15 Oct 1945 and was discharged on 19 Oct 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp. All Australian Troops serving in Greece are entitled to a 1940-41 Greek War Medal.

    Lionel Eric WEBSTER

    Lionel (Slim) was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard M.V. “Koolama”, on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hides” on 16 Dec 1942. After medical treatment and leave, he embarked for New Guinea aboard “KATOOMBA” on 27 Aug 1943 and re joined the unit on 18 Oct 1943 as a Trooper and served in Transport Section, Headquarters Group. As the unit had no transport, the Transport Section was used as another fighting Section. Lionel attended a Medical Board on 6 Apr 1944 and was classified Class “B”, he returned to Australia aboard “TAROONA” on 22 Apr 1944. He transferred to Headquarters, 2nd Australian Recruit Training Battalion on 15 Jun 1944 and was discharged on 29 Nov 1944. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

    Keith WATERS

    Keith enlisted in the Citizens Military Forces (Reserve) with Service No N204282 on 18 May 1942, he transferred to the A.I.F. on 28 May 1942 and was posted to 28th Infantry Training Battalion. He transferred to 29/46th Infantry Battalion on 30 Jan 1943 and then to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 23 Feb 1943. He joined the 2/2nd on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 6 Section, “B” Troop. Keith was wounded in action (left foot) on 1 Apr 1944 and medevac'd to Australia aboard 2/1st Australian Hospital Ship on 13 Jun 1944 . He was discharged on 30 Mar 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

After training, William joined the unit on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 8 Section, “C” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 8 Section, “C” Troop. He left the unit on 8 Oct 1945 and returned to Australia for was discharged on 25 Oct 1945. He transferred to 17th Australian Motor Regiment on13 Jun 1943. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 19 Feb 1943 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 22 Mar 1943. He joined the 2/2nd on 15 May 1943 and attended 1st Australian Cooking School from 27 May to 4 Jul 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard “TAROONA” on 11 Jul 1943 and re-joined the 2/2nd on 16 Jul 1943 as a Cook in Headquarters Group. He returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944.     James Henry WARD

    James enlisted on 19 May 1942 as a Sapper in 65th Australian Anti Aircraft Company with service No V157280. He transferred to the 2nd AIF on 30 Sept 1942 and after several appointments embarked for Milne Bay, New Guinea aboard "DUNTROON" on 27 Sept 1943. He transferred to 2/153rd Australian General Transport Company on 3 Jan 1944 and embarked from Lae, New Guinea aboard "DUNTROON" for Australia on 20 May 1944. After training he joined the unit on 19 Nov 1944 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. James left the unit and embarked from Jacquinot Bay, New Britain for Australia on 15 Sept 1945 aboard "TAROONA". He joined 140th Australian General Transport Company on 25 Oct 1945 and after serving with other transport units, he was discharged on 30 Sept 1946. For his service during the war he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45.
  11. Walter enlisted in Citizens Military Force (Reserves) on 24 Jul 1942 and transferred to the A.I.F. on 20 Oct 1942. After training he embarked for New Guinea aboard "DUNTROON" on 23 Mar 1943 and joined the 2/2nd on 8 Jul 1943. He returned to Australia aboard "CABERRA" on 18 Feb 1944. He re-joined the 2/2nd on 15 Sept 1944 on their return from New Guinea. After reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. He left the 2/2nd and embarked for Morotai aboard LST 419 on 10 Dec 1945. He joined 67th Australian Infantry Battalion on 19 Dec 1954 and then embarked for Japan aboard "STANFORD VICTORY" on 7 Feb 1946. He returned to Australia aboard "KANIMBLA" on 24 May 194, was posted to 1st Base Workshops on 16 Jun 1948 and he was discharged on 14 Sept 1948. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.   12. Robert enlisted on 24 Dec 1941 and was posted to 14th Infantry Battalion on 24 Mar 1942. He embarked for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 8 May 1943 and joined the unit on 8 Jul 1943 as a Trooper. He died of illness at Bena Bena Force Hospital, New Guinea on 30 Oct 1943 and is buried at Lae War Cemetery, Plot C, Row D, Grave 1.   13. Vincent (Paddy) was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Sapper in Engineers Section, Headquarters Group. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 11 Dec 1942. After leave he embarked for New Guinea aboard “KATOOMBA” on 27 Aug 1943 and re-joined the unit as a Sapper on 2 Nov 1944. He transferred to 2/6th Field Company Engineers on 28 Dec 1943, then to 2/5th Field Company Engineers on 14 Jan 1944 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 4 Mar 1944. Paddy transferred to 2/12th Infantry Battalion on 22 Jan 1945 and was discharged on 21 Dec 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  14. George joined No 5 Independent Company as a Private on 9 Apr 1942 and embarked for New Guinea aboard “TAROONA” on 13 Apr 1942. He was appointed Acting Lance Sergeant on 28 Oct 1942 and Acting Sergeant on 1 Dec 1942. He enplaned to Australia on 25 Mar 1943 and was commissioned Lieutenant on 1 Aug 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard “MONTORO” on 29 Nov 1943 and joined the unit as a Lieutenant on 6 Jan 1944, serving in “A” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was transferred as an Instructor at 1st Commando Training Squadron on 14 Dec 1944 and was discharged on 8 Jan 1946.   15. Stanley enlisted on 24 May 1940 and posted to 2/40th battalion on 12 mar 1941. He joined the unit on Timor as a Private from 2/40th Battalion, after the fall of Koepang, approx. March 1942. He left Timor from "SUAI" aboard "KURU" on 8 Jul 1942. Transferred to 34th Training Battalion on 31 Aug 1943 and promoted to Corporal on 9 Sept 1945. He was discharged on 11 Oct 1945. He transferred to 2/11th Field Company, RAE, on 9 Jun 1942 and then was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 15 May 1943. He embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper.     Arnold Samuel WEBB

    Arnold was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard M.V. “Koolama”, on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hides” on 16 Dec 1942. After leave and reorganization, he embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 2 Section, “A” Troop. He was medically evacuated to Australia on 21 May 1944. After medical treatment he re-joined the unit on 16 Dec 1944 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 2 Section, “A” Troop. He transferred to 2/2nd Forestry Company, Royal Australian Engineers on 2 May 1945 and returned to Australia on 23 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 10 Jan 1946. Extracted from C D Doig’s “A History of the 2nd Independent Company and 2/2 Commando Squadron”. After the Japanese landed, there was a party of 4 of these first reinforcement men, who had not been attached to any of the Sections, who decided to try and get back to Australia by boat and advise that the 2nd Independent Company was still intact and fighting on. The party consisted of Privates Robert Sydney Larney, Johnny Freeman, Desmond Laurence Lilya and Arnold Samuel Webb. They eventually reached Darwin and then embarked with the No 4 Independent Company for Timor aboard H.M.A.S “VOYAGER” on 22 Sept 1942. The men’s service papers state the following Robert Sydney Larney He was in 119th Australian General Hospital, Darwin from 11 Sept – 17 Sept 1942 and disembarked at Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. Johnny Freeman Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Aug 1942, He was in 119th Australian General Hospital, Darwin from 25 Aug – 8 Sept 1942 and disembarked Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. Desmond Laurence Lilya Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Aug 1942, He was in 119th Australian General Hospital from 16 Aug – 17 Sept 1942. Research shows he returned from Timor with the unit either 11 Dec 1942 or 16 Dec 1942, as the embarkation rolls do not differentiate. Arnold Samuel Webb Now reported “Returned to Australia” No Date, Disembarked at Darwin on 16 Dec 1942. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".

    John WARD

    John, (the family claim his real name was Daniel Mannix Ward), enlisted in to the Royal Australian Navy on 1 Dec 1936, with Service No 21330 and gave his DOB as 20 Mar 1919. He was discharged from the RAN on 26 Jun 1941. John, there is no mention of why he changed his name, enlisted into the 2nd AIF on 9 Sept 1942 and this time gave his DOB as 10 Jun 1913, both enlistment papers have place of birth as MAFFRA, Victoria. On his army attestation papers, it asks if any other military service he has answered "NO". He was posted to the Australian Army Service Corps on 22 Sept 1942. He attended a No 1 Course Drivers MT (Motor Transport) from 24 Oct to 21 Nov 1942. He transferred to LHQ (Land Headquarters) Training Centre, Jungle Warfare on 24 Mar 1943 and was posted to 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 5 Apr 1943. He transferred to Signals, 7th Australian Division on 5 Jun 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard “CANBERRA” on 26 Jul 1943. His records have no date of joining the unit on New Guinea but after medical treatment at 2/7th Australian General Hospital and 112nd Australian Convalescent Depot, it states that he re-joined the unit on 28 Jul 1944. He is known to have served as a Trooper in Headquarters Group and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in Headquarters Group. He was promoted Acting Sergeant on 21 Nov 1945 and transferred to 53rd Port Craft Company on 31 Dec 1945, then to 56th Port Landing Craft Company on 28 Jan 1946 and further to 13th Small Ships on 4 Feb 1946. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 26 Feb 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".

    James enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserves) with Service No 333431 in Feb 1939, then enlisted in the Permanent Australian Army with Service No VP6931 on 13 Mar 1940 and posted to 2nd Heavy Brigade, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA). He was sent to Darwin Mobile Force on 8 Jun 1940 and transferred to 18th Field Battery, RAA on 22 Sept 1940. He transferred to Provost Corps on 23 Apr 1941 and promoted Acting Corporal whilst servicing in Provost Corps, same date. He reverted to Gunner (Private) and returned to 18th Field Battery, RAA on 13 Sept 1941. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 6 Jul 1942 and after numerous Artillery postings, was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 1 Mar 1943. He joined the 2/2nd on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 Trooper and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 as a Trooper. He returned to Australia aboard "SALAMANA" on 18 Jan 1946 and was discharged on 17 Apr 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. John enlisted on 2 Jul 1940 and was posted to Guerrilla Warfare Centre, Foster, Vict on 26 Mar 1941 and was an original member of the unit, he was promoted to Acting Staff Sergeant on 11 Jul 1941 and his rank of Staff Sergeant was confirmed on 21 Nov 1941. He embarked aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Staff Sergeant in “Q” Staff, Headquarters Group. He was Killed in Action, 20 Feb 1942, when the Ration Truck was caught in an ambush, during the first landing of the Japanese on Timor. He is commemorated on the Northern Territory Memorial, Panel 3. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  23. Arthur (Harry) enlisted on 9 Apr 1941 and had previous service with Natal Mounted Rifles. He was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Corporal in Signals Section, Headquarters Group. He was Mentioned in Despatches, for Gallant and Distinguished Service, London Gazette, 25 May 1943 and in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 119-3 Jun 1943. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred as an Instructor to 1st Commando Training Squadron from 31 May to 28 Jun 1943, then Qld Lines of Communication Records Office on 29 Jun 1943, New Guinea Lines of Communication, Qld detachment on 22 Dec 1943 and back to Qld Lines of Communication Records Office, 28 Feb 1944. He was promoted Acting Sergeant on 1 Sept 1944 and confirmed Sergeant on 20 Jan 1944 and was discharged on 2 Nov 1945.     Ross Allan WINTOUR

    Ross enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserve) on 23 Sept 1941 and was posted to 25th Machine Gun Regiment. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 17 Jun 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 25 Feb 1943. After training, Ross joined the unit on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 7 Section, “C” Troop. He left the unit on 26 May 1945 and returned to Australia on 28 May 1945. He was discharged on 2 Jun 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

Roydon (Sep) enlisted on 21 May 1941, was appointed Lance Corporal on 10 Nov 1941 and was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Lance Corporal in No 9 Section, “C” Platoon. He was promoted Corporal on 16 Nov 1942 and after the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. He transferred to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 21 Jun 1943 and he embarked for New Guinea aboard “KATOOMBA” on 27 Aug 1943 and re-joined the 2/2nd on 2 Nov 1943 as a Corporal in No 10 Section, Headquarters Group and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was appointed Lance Sergeant on 6 Jul 1945 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Corporal in "A" Troop. He was promoted to Acting Sergeant on18 Aug 1945 and transferred to 4th Survey Battery on 29 Nov 1945. He returned to Australia aboard "KATOOMBA" on 16 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 8 Jan 1946.
