Charles had prior service with the R.A.A.F. with Service No 412856 for 5 months when he enlisted on 17 Dec 1941. He was posted to 11th Armoured Car Regiment on 28 Dec 1941, appointed Lance Corporal on 24 Aug 1942 and reverted to Trooper at his own request on 10 Jul 1943. He transferred to 1st Australian Base Depot on 5 Jun 1944 then to 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 5 Jun 1944 and then to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 6 Nov 1944. He flew to New Guinea on 10 May 1945, then embarked for New Britain aboard “SUVA” on 17 May 1945 and joined the 2/2nd on 19 May 1945 as a Trooper in No 1 Section, “A” Troop.
He returned to Australia aboard "KATOOMBA" on 16 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 8 Jan 1946.
He was entitled to the Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp and may also be entitled to 1939-45 Star.
