  • Important note
On reading or listening to items on this page, you may see or hear the native peoples of East Timor, New Guinea or New Britain referred to as "Boongs." As you will see if you search news articles on a site such as trove.nla.gov.au, that was the term commonly used at the time to refer to those native peoples. Although a person seeing or hearing the use of that term today might feel that the term is disrespectful, the fact is that the men of the 2/2 Commandos had the greatest respect and gratitude for the native peoples who helped them and sometimes fought alongside them. The respect and gratitude of the members of the 2/2 to these people is clear from the pages of this website. In displaying historical depictions of the events of WWII, the use of the common parlance of the day in no way diminishes that respect and gratitude and we ask that it be seen in its historical context.
