    Edward HODGSON

    Edward (Smash) enlisted on 10 Jun 1941 and was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Private in the Engineers Section, Headquarters Group. He was promoted Corporal on 10 May 1942 and Sergeant on 1 Aug 1942. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 11 Dec 1942. He was Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette, 25 May 1943 and in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 119-3 Jun 1943. These are the two Gazettes for the Timor Campaign. After leave and reorganization he embarked with the unit for New Guinea as a Sergeant in the Engineer Section, Headquarters Group aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 and flew to Australia to attend School of Military Engineers, NCO School No 74 from 3 Aug to 25 Nov 1944. He re-joined the 2/2nd on 24 Feb 1945 and after further leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Sergeant. He transferred to 22nd Infantry Battalion on 26 Dec 1945, returned to Australia on 20 Jan 1946 and was discharged on 18 Mar 1946. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp.
  2. James had been a Sergeant in 5th Battalion, Australian Military Forces (Militia) prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 13 Mar 1941. He was appointed Lieutenant 16 Jan 1942 with the Australian Army Service Corps. Transferred to the unit at Larrimah, N.T. and after reorganization, embarked with the unit for New Guinea as a Lieutenant, Officer Commanding the Transport Section, Headquarters Group, aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943. As the unit had no transport, the Transport Section was used as another Troop. He was Medevac aboard Australian Hospital Ship "MANUNDA" on 26 Dec 1943 and was discharged on 2 Apr 1944.     Francis Robert HOOD

    Francis enlisted on 30 Jul 1940 and posted to 2/40th Battalion. He embarked for Timor on 8 Dec 1942 and joined the unit on Timor as a Private from 2/40 Battalion, after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was medevac'd from SUAI aboard "KURU" on 15 Jul 1942. After treatment he was posted to 1st Australian Guard Compound on 8 Feb 1943. He was promoted Acting Corporal on 1 Feb 1944, confirmed Corporal on 15 May 1944 and appointed Lance Sergeant on 18 Jul 1945. He was discharged on 4 Apr 1946. After training he was posted to No 3 Australian Independent Company on1 Sept 1941 and appointed Acting Lance Corporal on9 Dec 1941. He embarked for New Guinea aboard "ORMISTON" on 17 Dec 1941 and returned to Australia on 4 Jul 1942. He transferred to 21st Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 24 Nov 1942 then to Land Head Quarters, Jungle Training Centre on 30 Jan 1943. He was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 15 Feb 1943 and reverted to Private at his own request on 12 Mar 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 16 Mar 1943 and joined the 2/2nd on 25 Jun 1943. He returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was promoted Acting Corporal on 30 Aug 1940, Corporal on 19 Aug 1941 and was transferred to 75th Light Aid Detachment on 18 Sept 1940. He embarked for Timor on 8 Dec 1941 and joined the 2/2nd on Timor from 75th Light Aid Detachment after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was medevac'd to Australia aboard HMAS "KALGOORLIE" from Betano on 13 Sept 1942. After medical treatment he was posted to Australian Army Ordnance Training Depot on 3 Jan 1943 and then Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME) Training Depot on 14 Jul 1943, then 2nd Australian Tank Training Depot on 2 Oct 1943. He transferred to 2/2nd Australian Base Workshop on 12 Apr 1944 and then to 2/4th Australian Base Workshop on 25 Aug 1944. He attended Land Head Quarters AEME School, Armament Artificers, Engine No5 Course, 13 Aug - 6 Oct 1945 and qualified with Distinction . Norman was discharged on 3 Jan 1946.     Leslie Noel HILLS

    Leslie enlisted on 23 Jan 1943 and posted to 6th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery on 20 Mar 1942. He transferred to 3rd Australian Infantry Brigade on 19 Jul 1944 and then to 28th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 10 Aug 1944. Les joined the 2/2nd on 31 Jan 1945 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. He returned to Australia aboard "TAROONA" on 15 Aug 1945 and was discharged on 8 Jul 1946. He was entitled to the Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  7. Bernard enlisted on 22 Oct 1940 and was posted to 2/40th Battalion and embarked for Timor on 17 Jan 1942. He joined the 2/2nd on Timor from 2/40 Battalion, as a Private after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was one of the former Koepang men, who moved to the village of Mape for intensive commando training and, on 8 May 1942, they were formed into a new Platoon, "D" Platoon under the command of Lieutenant Turton and later under Lt Doig. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 16 Dec 1942. after medical treatment he was posted to 22nd Australian Motor Regiment on 15 Mar 1943 and to 14th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 3 Nov 1943, He was discharged on 1 Dec 1944.   8. Robert enlisted on 21 Jun 1940 and was posted to 2/40th Battalion. He joined the 2/2nd on Timor, after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was medevac from Betano to Australia on 25 Oct 1942 and after medical treatment was posted to 2/12th Battalion on 29 May 1943, he embarked for New Guinea with them aboard "KATOOMBA" on 17 Aug 1943 and was wounded in action on 29 Jan 1944, returning to 2/12th on 28 Feb 1944. He returned to Australia aboard "TAROONA" with the 2/12th on 6 May 1944 and was discharged 4 Nov 1944. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

    Roy Alan HEFFERNAN

    Roy enlisted on 26 Jun 1940 and was posted to 2/40th Battalion. He embarked for Timor on 8 Dec 1941 and joined the 2/2nd on Timor from 2/40 Battalion as a Private after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was medevac from "Betano" aboard "KURU" on 2 Sep 1942. After medical treatment he was discharged on 19 Jan 1944. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  10. Arthur joined the unit on Timor as a Corporal from 2/40th Battalion, after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He reverted to Private with the unit until trained as a Commando N.C.O. and then appointed Lance Corporal. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on either 11 Dec 1942 or 16 Dec 1942, as the embarkation rolls do not differentiate. After WW2 he served with Regt No 64579 and was discharged on 18 Aug 1948. Arthur was awarded 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Australian Service Medal 1939-45 and an Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
  11. Henry enlisted on 12 Jun 1940, claiming he had 5yrs service in Field Artillery, he was posted to 2/8thAustralian Army Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery on 13 Jun 1940. He transferred to 2/40th Battalion on 21 Aug 1940 (he was a baker by trade) and attended a special bakery course with 2nd Field Bakery in Darwin 29 Oct to 25 Nov 1941 and returned to 2/40th. He embarked for Timor on 8 Dec 1941 and transferred to Australian Army Service Corps, Sparrow Force on 20 Dec 1941 as a Specialist Group II Baker. He joined the 2/2nd on Timor as a Private from Australian Army Service Corps, after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He was medevac to Australia from "SUAI" aboard “KURU” on 17 Jul 1942. After numerous medical treatment and transfers to Australian Field Bakeries he was discharged on 30 Apr 1946.     Edwin enlisted on 29 May 1940 and posted to 16th Battery, 2/8th Army Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery on 30 May 1940. He embarked for the Middle East aboard HMT "STRATHMORE" on 16 Nov 1940, was appointed Lance Bombardier on 1 Feb 1941 and transferred to 2nd Echelon, Head Quarters, 1st Australian Corps, Intelligence Section on 6 Apr 1941. Revert to Gunner on 1 Apr 1941 and Appointed Lance Corporal on 23 Apr 1941. He was promoted Corporal on 18 Jan 1942 and returned to Australia aboard "ANDES" on 18 Feb 1942. Posted to Norther Territory Force Signals on 16 Jun 1942 and appointed Lieutenant on 30 Aug 1942. Edwin embarked for Timor aboard HMAS "KALGOORLIE" on 12 Aug 1942 and joined the 2/2nd on Timor as a Lieutenant in the Signals and Cypher Unit sent from Australia after contact was made with “WINNIE THE WAR WINNER”. He was Mentioned in Despatches in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No 271/1943 for his distinguished service on Timor. After the campaign on Timor, he returned to Australia on 10 Jan 1943. He transferred to Cipher Product Section and was discharged on 13 Nov 1944. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  13. Cecil joined the unit on 24 Nov 1942 and joined them on their return from Timor. He embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 New Guinea as a Trooper in No 1 Sect, “A” Troop and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 1 Sect, “A” Troop. He was discharged 6 June 1946 but re enlisted for Korea with Service No 2/7271 and served with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, from 28 sept 1950 to 8 Nov 1950 and then from 16 May 1951 to 14 Jan 1952. He went on to serve in Malaya as a Sergeant with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment where he was Killed in Action on the 4 Mar 1956 and Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette, 30 Oct 1956.
  14. Herbert enlisted on 26 Feb 1942 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 2 Jul 1942 and posted to Armoured Corps Ordnance Workshop on 14 Aug 1942. He transferred to 3rd Armoured Division Field Workshops on 24 Dec 1942 and after commando training, he embarked for New Guinea aboard "KATOOMBA" on 27 Aug 1943 and joined the unit on 2 Nov 1943 in New Guinea as a Trooper in the Transport Section. As the unit had no transport, the Transport Section was used as another Troop. He returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Lance Corporal. He returned to Australia aboard "ORMISTON" on 18 Oct 1945 and was discharged on 30 Oct 1945. He served as a lighthouse keeper for many years and was awarded a British Empire Medal (Civil Division) London Gazette, 12 Jun 1981, "For Public Service". He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".

    John enlisted on 4 Jul 1940 and was posted to 2/11th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) and promoted Acting Corporal on 19 Aug 1940. His rank of Corporal was confirmed on 15 Dec 1941. He joined the unit on Timor from 2/11 Field Company, RAE as a Corporal after the fall of Koepang, approx March 1942. He embarked at “BETANO” for Darwin aboard “KURU” on 2 Sep 1942 as a Sergeant. He was Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette, 25 May 1943 and in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 119-3 Jun 1943. These are the two Gazettes for the Timor Campaign. He was also awarded a Commander in Chief Commendation Card vide Army Order 69, 13 Jul 1943. He transferred to 3rd Australian Maintenance Platoon, RAE on 5 May 1943, to 21st Australian Maintenance Platoon, RAE on 30 May 1943. He was promoted to Acting Warrant Officer Class II on 1 Jun 1943 and on 5 Jul a correction rank to be Lance Sergeant, but another notation Acting Warrant Officer Class II on 1 Jun 1943 . He transferred to 1st RAE Training Centre on 21 Nov 1943 then to 21st Mechanical Equipment Park, RAE, on 25 Nov 1944. he transferred to 4th Australian Army Troops, RAE on 19 Dec 1944 He served in numerous postings throughout Australia and was discharged on 13 Apr 1945 He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.

    John enlisted ion 15 Jan 1943 and as a Baker by trade, was posted to Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) Training Depot, Victoria on 20 Jan 1943. He embarked for New Guinea aboard "KATOOMBA" on 11 Nov 1943 and joined the 2/2nd on 19 Nov 1943. He transferred to Land Headquarters, New Guinea on 18 Jan 1944 and flew to Australia on 6 Jul 1944. He transferred to 6th Australian Field Baking Company, AASC on 13 Mar 1945 and was discharged on 6 Jun 1945. He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
  17. William enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserve) with Service No V451896 and was called up for full time duty on 14 Jan 1942. After training he was posted to 2nd Australian Regiment Signals Training Unit on 22 Aug 1943. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 25 Oct 1943 and was posted to 19th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 9 Nov 1943. He was posted to Australian Jungle Warfare Training Centre on 25 Jan 1944, then to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 7 Feb 1944.     James enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserves) on 12 May 1942 and was posted to 31st Infantry Training Battalion on 16 May 1942. He was posted to 29/46th Battalion on 30 Jan 1943 and transferred to the A.I.F. on 4 Feb 1942. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 26 Oct 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 25 Feb 1943. He joined the unit on 15 May 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea as a Lance Corporal in No 1 Section, “A” Troop aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. He was appointed paid Lance Corporal on 25 Jan 1945.     Patrick enlisted into the Citizens Military Force (Reserve) on 29 Apr 1942 and joined 102nd Anti Tank Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA) on 1 May 1942. He transferred to the 104th Anti Tank Regiment, RAA on 6 Jul 1942 and joined the AIF on 20 Jul 1942. He transferred to 1st Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 19 Jul 1944, then 32nd Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 8 Aug 1944. he was selected and transferred to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 20 Nov 1944. Patrick joined the unit on 31 Jan 1945 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 9 Sect, “C” Troop. He left the unit on 26 Dec 1945 and returned to Australia on 16 Jun 1946. He was discharged on 20 Jun 1946.     Keith joined the Militia 2 Dec 1941 and served to 21 Sept 1942, then joined the unit at Canungra, Qld and he embarked with the unit for New Guinea as a Trooper in No 5 Sect, “B” Troop aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944. After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper in No 5 Sect, “B” Troop. He was discharged on 6 Jun 1946.
  25. Alistair joined the unit on Timor as a Corporal in the Signals and Cypher Unit sent from Australia after contact was made with “WINNIE THE WAR WINNER”. There is no date of him leaving the unit, as some of the early embarkation rolls from Timor are missing. He was discharged on 28 Feb 1946.
