Neil was an original member of the unit, embarking aboard “S.S. ZEALANDIA” on 8 Dec 1941 for Timor as a Private in the Headquarters Staff. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 11 Dec 1942.
He transferred out of the unit to Australian Army Medical Corps and was attached to 2 / 16th Battalion on 6 Jul 1943 and embarked for New Guinea with them aboard "DUNTROON" on 6 Aug 1943 and returned to Australia with them aboard "CANBERRA" on 18 Feb 1944. He embarked with the 2/16th Battalion for MOROTAI aboard "GENERAL ANDERSON" on 2 Jun 1945, then embarked for BALIKPAPAN aboard "MANOORA" on 21 Jun 1945.
Neil returned to Australia aboard "MORETON BAY" on 19 Dec 1945 and was discharged on 14 Jan 1946.
He applied to join the Royal Australian Air Force on 3 Oct 1957 but it is not known if he was successful.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".
