John enlisted into the Militia (Reserves) on 16 Dec 1941 and was posted to 44th Infantry Battalion, he transferred to A.I.F. on 27 Aug 1942 and transferred to 10th Light Horse Regiment on 17 Jan 1943. He was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 9 Jun 1944 and transferred to the unit on 15 Nov 1944. After leave, John embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper.
He returned to Australia aboard "TAROONA" on 15 Sept 1945 and was discharged on 20 Jun 1946.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
