William enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserves) with service No V15058 on 27 May 1941 and posted to 65th Anti Aircraft Company, Royal Australian Artillery on 10 Jun 1941. He transferred to A.I.F. on 10 Oct 1941.
He was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard “KOOLAMA” on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private.
He embarked at Betano for Darwin as a Private aboard “KURU” on 2 Sept 1942.
There are only service papers for his Reserve service and not his A.I.F. at this time.
