Percy enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserve) with Service No V245711 on 18 Dec 1941 and was posted to 3rd Australian Artillery Training Regiment. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 16 Sept 1942 and was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 23 Feb 1943.
He joined the 2/2nd on 25 Feb 1943 and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 5 Section, “B” Troop.
Doig's book, has the following, "On 22 Oct 1943, Lt Doig and No 5 Section were ordered to patrol towards Mataloi III, in the RAMU Valley, New Guinea. On the 25 Oct 1943, they reached Orguruni Village and came under intense fire from 15 yards (13.5 Mtrs). When Private Hughie Brown, the Section Bren Gunner, was killed by a sniper, Private Mitchell took over the Bren Gun and became a victim of the same sniper."
Percy was Killed in Action on 25 Oct 1943 and unfortunately, his body was not recovered. He is commemorated at LAE MEMORIAL Panel 1, Papua New Guinea.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
