Murray enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserve) on16 Mar 1942 with service No V250577 and after training was posted to 4th Australian Division, Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) in Western Australia. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 25 Aug 1942. He was posted to the Australian Jungle Training Centre in Queensland on 15 Aug 1944 and posted to Headquarters, 1st Australian Base Area, Qld (HQ 1 ABA) on 7 Nov 1944. Attended No 24 Motor Transport Conversion School on 18 Nov 1944 and returned to HQ 1 ABA on 8 Dec 1944.
He transferred to the 2/2nd on 5 Apr 1944 and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Trooper. Murray transferred to "D" Company, 67th Infantry battalion on 6 Dec 1945 and embarked for Morotai aboard Landing Ship Troops 419 on 10 Dec 1945. He transferred to 34th Brigade Signals on 17 Dec 1945 and embarked for Japan aboard "TAOS VICTORY" on 15 Feb 1946. He transferred to 120th Australian General Transport Platoon on 25 May 1946 and returned to Australia aboard "KANIMBLA" on 22 Jun 1947.
He was discharged on 25 Aug 1947.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "JAPAN".
