Laurence enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserves) on 12 Aug 1937 and served with 22nd Infantry Battalion. He was called up for full time duty on 31 Oct 1941 and transferred to 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron on 7 Mar 1943. Lawrence joined the unit on 15 May 1943 at Canungra, Qld and embarked with the unit for New Guinea aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 as a Trooper in No 9 Section, “C” Troop. Appointed Lance Corporal on 8 Jun 1943 and paid Lance Corporal on 1 Jul 1943. When contact was made with the Japanese during a patrol in the RAMU Valley, New Guinea, on 10 Jan 1944, he was reported Missing and later confirmed Killed in Action on the same day.
He was later buried LAE War Cemetery, New Guinea on the 6 Jan 1946, in Plot "M", Row "C", Grave 6.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
