Ian enlisted on 14 Feb 1944 as a Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps and after training was posted to the 2/2nd on 14 Nov 1944 as the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO). He joined the unit at Strathpine, Qld, as the Medical Officer and embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Captain, Officer Commanding the R.A.M.C. Section, Headquarters Group. He was posted to 2nd Field Ambulance on 7 Jan 1946 and flew to Australia on 8 Feb 1946 and then to 112nd Base Military Hospital on 8 Mar 1946.
Ian was discharged on 21 Jun 1946.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp
