Sydney enlisted on 1 July 1940 and was posted to 7th Division Cavalry. He embarked for the Middle East on 26 Dec 1940 and transferred to 6th Division Intelligence Section on 29 Jan 1942, he was appointed Lance Corporal same day. He returned to Australia aboard "ANDES" on 16 Mar 1942 and posted to NT Force Signals on 16 Jun 1942. He was promoted Sergeant on 17 Jun 1942 and embarked for Timor aboard HMAS "VOYAGER" on 22 Sept 1942. He joined the 2/2nd on Timor as a Sergeant in the Signals and Cypher Unit sent from Darwin, after contact was made with “Winnie the War Winner” March 1942. He returned to Australia on 9 Jan 1943 with 2/4th Independent Company.
He was appointed Acting Lieutenant on 20 Dec 1943 and Lieutenant on 29 Dec 1943. He was posted to 2/43rd Australian Cipher Section on 29 Dec 1943 and embarked for Morotai aboard "GENERAL BUTNER" on 8 Apr 1945, then embarked for British North Borneo aboard Landing Ship Troops 996 on 13 May 1945. He returned to Australia aboard "JJ CARRIGAN" on 8 Dec 1945.
He was discharged on 20 Dec 1945.

He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp
