Stanley enlisted into the Citizens Military Force (Reserves) on 8 Jan 1939 and was posted to 7th Light Horse Regiment with service number N4545. He transferred to the Australian Infantry Force on 24 Sept 1941 and was a member of the First Reinforcements that arrive at Dili, Timor, aboard “KOOLAMA”, on 22 Jan 1942, prior to the Japanese landing. He joined the unit as a Private and was a member of the diversion group for the “DILI RAID”. After the campaign on Timor, he embarked with the unit, for Australia aboard the Royal Dutch destroyer “Tjerk Hiddes” on 11 Dec 1942.
He transferred to the Allied Geographical Section on 16 Jun 1943 and promoted Acting Corporal on 18 Oct 1943 and Corporal on 7 Apr 1944.
He flew to Hollandia on 15 Feb 1945, the to Leyte, Philippines on 19 Feb 1945. Returned to Hollandia by plane on 29 Feb 1945 and flew back to Australia on 24 Feb 1945. He flew to Manila on 18 Jul 1945, was promoted to Sergeant on 21 Sept 1945 and flew back to Australia on 28 Sept 1945.
He was discharged on 9 May 1946.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
