Ross enlisted in Citizens Military Force (Reserve) on 19 May 1941 and served with 1st Aust Field Ambulance, then 18th Aust Field Ambulance on 1 Oct 1941 as a Corporal. He was posted to Guerrilla Warfare Centre at Foster, Vict on 1 Oct 1942. On 30 Oct 1942, he reverted to Private at his own request. After training, Ross embarked for New Guinea aboard “KATOOMBA” on 12 Mar 1943 and joined the unit on 25 Jun 1943 and served in No 5 Section, "B" Troop. He left the unit and embarked for Australia aboard “KATOOMBA” on 6 Apr 1944 and re-joined the unit back in Australia on 9 Sept 1944. He left the unit on 6 Nov 1944 and was discharged on 22 Nov 1944.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below.
