Robert enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (Reserve) with Service No69155 on 20 Sept 1939 and was posted to 1st Cavalry Division Signals. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 1 Jul 1940. The Reserve was re-organized and he was given the new Service No N80375 on 1 Oct 1941 and was posted to 6th Australian Motor Regiment, Australian Armoured Corps. He was promoted Sergeant on 15 Feb 1942 and transferred to the A.I.F. on 22 Sept 1942. He was appointed Acting Lieutenant on 2 Oct 1942. The unit designation changed to 6th Australian Armoured Car Regiment on 6 Jan 1943. He was posted to Headquarters, 6th Australian Armoured Brigade, Australian Armoured Corps Signals Training Unit on 6 Jul 1943, then served as an instructor at 3rd Australian Armoured Regiment Signal Training Unit, 20 Jul 1943 to 23 May 1944.
He was posted to 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion on 9 Jun 1944 and joined the 2/2nd on 12 Jan 1945. He embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Lieutenant, Officer Commanding, No 9 Sect, “C” Troop.
He returned to Australia aboard "SALAMAUA" on 18 Jan 1946 and was discharged on 18 Mar 1946.
He was entitled to the Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp and possibly a 1939-45 Star.
