John enlisted on 1 Oct 1941 and was posted to 1st Armoured Training Regiment. He transferred to 2/11th Armoured Car Regiment in Western Australia on 22 Dec 1942 and then transferred to 1st Australian Base Depot in New South Wales on 12 Jun 1944. He flew from Australia to PORT MORESBY on 10 May 1945 and then embarked for New Britain aboard "SUVA" on 17 May and joined the unit on New Britain on 19 May 1945 as a Trooper.
He transferred to 13th Small Ships Company on 26 Dec 1945, returned to Australia on 14 Mar 1946 and was discharged on 26 Mar 1946.
He was entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific".
