James joined the R.A.A.F. as aircrew on 7 Dec 1941, with Service No 421071. He served as a Leading Aircraftsman until joining the A.I.F. on 9 Sept 1942.
He embarked with the unit for New Guinea as a Signalman in Signals Section, Headquarters Group, aboard S.S. “DUNTROON” on 17 Jun 1943 and returned to Australia with them aboard “TAROONA” on 3 Sept 1944.
After leave and reorganization, he embarked for New Britain aboard “TAROONA” on 9 Apr 1945 with the unit as a Signalman, Signals Section, Headquarters Group.
He was discharged on 9 Jan 1946.
James re-enlisted into the Royal Aust Signals Corps with Service No 2/1908 and served from 9 Jan 1948 to 7 Nov 1965 and retired as a Warrant Officer Class II.
This service included British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan.
