William enlisted in Citizen Military Force (Reserves)and was posted to 8th Battalion on 29 Jan 1941. He was allocated to "A" Company on 10 Jun 1941 and was posted to Darwin on 4 Feb 1942 as a Specialist Signaller. He transferred to 7th Military District (MD) Signals on 26 May 1942. He transferred to the A.I.F. on 15 Jul 1942 and joined Sparrow Force on Timor, on 15 Sept 1942, after contact had been made with Australia with “Winnie the War Winner” and returned to Darwin on 9 Jan 1943.
He transferred to Australian Signals Training battalion on 24 Apr 1943, 38th Australian Wireless Task Section on 26 Jul 1943, 1st Australian Beach Signals Section on 24 Aug 1943. He joined “Z” Special Forces on 8 Jan 1945 and served in Netherlands East Indies 21 Sept to 3 Dec 1945 and was discharged 14 Dec 1945.
According to his service papers he was entitled to the Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45, pictured below. He is now also entitled to the Australian Service Medal 1945-75 with a clasp "S.W.Pacific" and could be entitled to the 1939-45 Star due to change of rules in 1995.
